Heidegger in the Age of Cybernetics (Artificial Intelligence)

In the 1960s, Heidegger, following Wiener, anticipated the unstoppable expansion of cybernetic technology, which he regarded as a universal science that would mark the end of philosophical thought and even of humanity itself. This negative assessment is consistent with his stance toward modern technology. In this article, we examine his various interventions on the matter. We consider that what Heidegger understands by cybernetics is equivalent to artificial intelligence. In the final section of this paper, we present an alternative and more positive view of cybernetics, proposed by Leonardo Polo and inspired by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. This also entails the possibility of embracing, in a positive way, the current challenge posed by artificial intelligence.
