Abstract

The deep interweaving between philosophy and religion is an indisputable matter in late Neoplatonism. In other words, the religious structure of Neoplatonic philosophy sets out a unique speculative horizon that is not easily understood by the modern reader of these texts, either in the genre of the comments to the
Platonic dialogues or in the more personal works where the metaphysical- theological reflection outstands. In fact, the peculiar way of reading the platonic dialogue Parmenides, the mode of interpreting this founding text of the Neoplatonic thought involves considering the infl uence of the vocabulary of ancient cults and the way in which such a vocabulary becomes an organic part or better an axial part of such an exegetic strategy. The present paper aims at showing such exegetic strategy by resorting to Proclus who, by discussing the irrelevance of the logical interpretation of the Parmenides, becomes heir to the reading clues learnt from his master, Syrianus.
