The Chronology of the Last Supper According to Saint Thomas Aquinas

The controversy over the chronology of the Last Supper is one of the great problems of contemporary Catholic theology. Modern scholarly studies, most of which employ the historical-critical method, arrive at conflicting conclusions regarding the date of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ (14 or 15 Nisan?). Moreover, numerous scientific articles have highlighted a supposed contradiction between the narrative of St. John and that of the Synoptics. The chronological question exceeds the limits of academic discussion since it affects the life of the Church in terms of the credibility of the Gospels, the teaching of the faith and Eucharistic devotion. The aim of this work is to answer the chronological controversy from the perspective of the Tradition of the Catholic Church, using the sources and methodology of St. Thomas Aquinas. We conclude that the apparent contradiction between the synoptic and Johannine chronologies is nothing more than a problem of interpretation of certain terms about the Jewish festivals. The four evangelists place the Lord’s Supper in the early hours of Nisan 15. This article attempts to recover a solution from classical theology that has been overlooked by modern theologians.
