The expression servi a natura used to deny the rights of the indigenous peoples of America to govern themselves and be subject to slavery, allows us to delve into the ultimate foundations of human rights. Guided by Aristotle and Saint Thomas, Brother Bartolomé de Las Casas explains three constitutive notes that belong to human nature: rationality, freedom and religiosity. From these three constitutive notes we will especially analyze freedom, making the necessary references to rationality and religiosity and also guided by the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
