Abstract

The consideration of free will in the Middle Ages was mainly theological; however, some philosophical approaches can be found. Theology had a great challenge: to reconcile man’s free will with divine grace. The challenge was marked by St Augustine’s reflections and his way of approaching theology. The coming of Aristotle’s works redefined the way of approaching not only the challenge but also theology. The argumentative strength at stake in this discussion evidences that the interest in free will is not limited to temporal human realization but also to eternal realization. The complexity of man’s acts requires a constant deepening into the notion of freedom and its way to fulfill itself existentially. Who drives the realization man’s life? Is it Intelligence? Is it Will? Is it affections? If all these capacities are intertwined in the free act, how do they do it? And, how does God intervene? The authors analyzed will give different perspectives on the solution.
