The article suggests a reencounter with the conflict that took place in the mid 12th century between two of the most important figures of the Middle Ages: Bernard of Clairvaux and Peter Abelard. The legend has marred this story by presenting a confrontation between two archetypes: faith and reason, tradition and renewal, authority and critical spirit. In the light of new research, the events are summed up and the nuances that contribute to their resignification are emphasized. The idea is to conclude that the interpretative outline of a zigid antagonism is no longer valid, and that beyond the characters, the incident must be visualised as a sign of a change of era.
