This work sets out to establish a discussion between St. Augustine’s notion of evil and what Hannah Arendt has come to call “the banality of evil” as a normal
behavior of the man of the 20th century. It further tries to highlight the connection between evil seen as that which is not an essence and the idea of banality as
something not rooted but superficial. The discussion will be the starting point from which we will delve into the controversial aspects of the nature of evil and its origins.
