To develop a functional and organic unity, the living being needs to preserve an internal distinction between form and matter as cause and auxiliary cause of such unity. A reconsideration of the examples of ax and eye under the perspective of the logical-semantic criteria of antero-posteriority allows to explain the difference between body and soul within a context that emphasizes the no-separation of soul from body and clarifies the ontological status of the organic part with the purpose of saving the substantial unity of a living organism.
