Bishop Ernesto Filippi in Mexico: 14 Months of a Surreal Adventure (1921–1923)

This study analyzes the historical and symbolic construction of the figure of San Martín de Porres based on his life and work, and interprets the iconographic representations of popular devotion present in burial niches at the El Ángel Cemetery in Lima, Peru. Using a descriptive–interpretative design and a documentary and cultural semiotic analysis strategy, a sample of 1,000 niches was observed through cluster sampling. The results show that San Martín de Porres occupies a significant place within the funerary iconographic repertoire (10%), becoming a symbol of intercession, popular identity, and social justice within a space of collective memory. The study provides empirical evidence on the role of cemeteries as sites of symbolic production, where faith, memory, and identity articulate cultural meanings in the face of death.
