Marriage: A Public Dispute. The Papacy in the Face of 19th-Century Changes

This article offers an approach to the debate on family and marriage at the end of the nineteenth century, starting from the viewpoint that constitutes the pontifical discourse of the time expressed in the encyclical Arcanum Divinae Sapientiae. It seeks to show some of the experiences that this encyclical collects and the dispute in which it is inscribed with important ideological and political currents of the time. The conflict surrounding the concept of marriage and family is part of the dispute over the shaping of the political characteristic of nineteenth-century Western societies. It is intimately related to the public, precisely because it is articulated around a sphere that is beginning to be called "private". Its exploration strengthens our knowledge of the articulations and exclusions that make up the public and the political and enriches our understanding of the societies we inhabit.
