Differently from other disciplines that concentrate on partial aspects, Library Science analyzes libraries through function, background, users, services and installations by applying Naudeé’s scheme (1600-1653). The institutions or institutional links on which they depend serve as their backdrop. It shows that conventual libraries offer informative, bibliographic and documentary data so that charisma, mission and objectives of the religious congregation to which they belong may be carried out. The objective of this article is to show, through the study of the General index of this library of the Convent de la Merced of Barcelona, that the conventual library arises as a space for dialectic relation between books and readers. Such a relation is different in each historical period and can be a support for prayer, soul healing, research and teaching. At the same time, it becomes indispensable to delve into the knowledge of the history of the book, libraries and their organizations.
